    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

    4Cs observations

    posted Friday, 23 March 2007
I’m halfway through day 2 of 4Cs. I’ve been to a couple disappointing presentations, but the majority of the presentations I’ve gone to have been excellent. I’ll blog about specific sessions when I have a chance. A couple observations at this point:
    • Community colleges and their instructors are largely invisible here, although many, many of the attendees teach in community colleges. I haven’t seen this situation get any better in the five 4Cs I’ve attended.
    • Presenters who read their papers as if they are completely disinterested convey to audiences that their topics are completely disinteresting. Don’t read: present. There’s a difference, you know. And, note to two particular presenters: if you’re going to read your paper in a disinterested manner, at the very least don’t slouch over the table and use one hand to hold your head up while reading the paper. Please.

Liz, I'm here and not very invisible. Do you want to get together tomorrow (Saturday?). Send me an email.

I miss the CCCC! This is the first time in years that I haven't attended.

I have to say, though, I don't miss hearing presenters read papers in a monotone. Ugh.

You are right, Liz. Those folks who read in a monotone voice clearly don't care much about their own work and they also don't really seem to care about those listening to the argument presented. That kind of "presentation" drives me nuts!

Liz, we missed each other. Rats. I went to the CCC Online presentation, which was great, and then to the Slevin memorial and Jeff Rice and Jenny Edbauer's talks. How were the ones that you went to?
