    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

    a little calm

    posted Sunday, 7 October 2007
The last couple of months have been grueling, but I managed to leave work on Friday without bringing home one speck of work and I have had a wonderfully relaxing weekend. Saturday I got up at 6 to make scones (whole wheat scones with candied ginger and currants, mmmmmmm) to bring to Lily’s 9 a.m. soccer game. No, I’m not foolish enough to think the soccer team would eat scones—Capri Sun and granola bars are more their speed. No, the scones were for my dad and sister and her husband, who came to witness the wonder of 5-year old girls playing soccer.

After the game, everyone came back to our house for brunch. We made coconut waffles with an apricot-honey compote and a frittata with zucchini from our garden and a fantastic faux sausage T found (it’s made by a company called Field Roast). I also made Mai Tais, which were fantastic—not that syrupy sweet crap passed off by most bars. Here's the Mai Tai recipe I used (I used vanilla-almond syrup rather than orgeat syrup and simple syrup.) Oh, and of course, coffee.

After everyone left, T and Lily went to a birthday party for one of Lily’s friends and I drowsed on the couch next to an open window, enjoying the cool Autumn breeze and the sound of leaves being blown around. When I woke up, T and Lily were back and the three of us spent the rest of the day hanging around the house, reading, watching movies, etc.

This morning, Lily seems to have the flu and is curled up on the couch under a pile of blankets. I’m sad that she’s sick, but it’s pretty relaxing for me to be able to sit on the couch next to her reading and still feel like I’m being a good mother.
