    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

    First week of classes

    posted Thursday, 24 August 2006

The first week of classes included the usual chaos of switching classrooms, troubleshooting technology, and calming blog-anxiety. The good news is that 80% of my students' blogs work, and 100% of my students in ENG 121-012 now have chairs. Some random first week thoughts:

    • This gives me some ideas for my Lit & Film students' blogs.

    • I sent chapter 4 to my committee!

    • My Tablet PC is acting up, randomly shutting down and restarting for no particular reason. I've lost a few emails that had to be rewritten, but so far I've been lucky to not lose anything significant. But if this keeps up, the next few weeks won't be pretty. First the motherboard, now this.

    • I'm pondering a "leadership opportunity" that would start in the spring and then kick into high gear next fall. If I decide to take the opportunity, I could potentially only be teaching three classes next fall rather than the usual five. I'm vascillating wildly on whether or not I want to pursue this opportunity. My stint as chair of a strategic planning committee will probably end this fall, and I am completely burned out on administrative stuff. I was planning to take at least a full year off from administrative stuff and just teach. The thought of focusing completely on teaching is elating and exciting. But, this particular opportunity is pretty exciting, too. I have no idea what I'll decide. . .

    • Completely unrelated to work. . . . this could explain why we have so many wasps in our yard this summer (Lily calls wasps "bastards" as if "bastards" was a synonym for wasp--she says things like, "Did you see that bastard in the geraniums?")

I like the idea for the lit&film, based on the link. As for the tablet, does it act up at home? Mine is charming at home, so I am beginning to think it is some network funky issue which will never be solved. Hmmm, the "leadership opportunity" sounds grand for you, yet when I think of you only teaching three classes, I like it less (purely selfishly on both ends of course). As for my first week, it gave me a bit of a headache and spaciness, mostly due to the end of the week and the trip debacle, not due to anything related to classes and students--duh.
