A while back, Joanna asked me how I balanced book orders to the bookstore with the ballot method of choosing readings. I talked to the bookstore manager when book orders were due and told her what I was planning to do. We agreed that I would decide on and order the very first book to be read, which meant that the second book to be read—a book students would be choosing—wouldn’t be needed until the middle of the third week of the semester. That meant that as long as students voted during the first class meeting and I immediately got the resulting book orders in, the books would all arrive on time and the arrangement would not be unduly taxing on the bookstore. Of course, if every teacher of every class decided to do this, chaos would ensue.
Joanna also asked me to write more about the Editorial Board assignment I gave my comp 1 Honors students. In lieu of paraphrasing the assignment, I’m posting the assignment here. Feel free to borrow, adapt, steal, whatever. And if you do, let me know how it goes!
