    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

    mise en place

    posted Monday, 11 June 2007
Sometime in the last few weeks, Lily was helping me measure ingredients for pancakes. I first got out all the ingredients and said, “This is called the mise en place.” (I can’t help myself—I love the technical aspects of, well, just about everything, but particularly cooking and baking. I’m always explaining to Lily how food chemistry works, what the correct term is for a certain type of spatula, etc. She’s good about humoring me.)

Fast forward to today. I announced that I was going to work out and Lily said, “Mom, I’ll get your mise en place,” and ran into my bedroom. When I went in a couple minutes later, my workout clothes and shoes were lined up neatly on the bed.
