    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

    • Blogging has been light since May, partly because I’m working so much on the book and partly because of an unbloggable issue. The unbloggable issue is close to resolution, so maybe I’ll be blogging more soon. In the meantime, random bullets of crap are about all I can manage.
    • I’m in the process of updating my will and advance directive. For some reason, I find that writing and updating these documents is not nearly as stressful or morbid as I thought it might be. It gives me a sense of peace to know that Lily and other loved ones will be taken care of when I die and to know that they won’t have to guess about what I would want in terms of life support and “heroic measures.” It’s probably just the anal organizer in me. It always makes me feel good to know that everything is in order.
    • It makes me so happy to see the fall colors in the trees. Lots of trees on campus are starting to turn yellow and the sunlight the last couple of weeks has been so clear and beautiful.
    • Lily is playing soccer again, and despite the fact that the coach is a bit . . . temperamental . . . . Lily is definitely more engaged and focused this season. Last season, she’d kick the ball and then immediately lose interest and drift off into her own world. There’s still some of that this season, but in the last two games, she actually kicked the ball and then followed it a few times. This is a BIG DEAL for my daughter!

Thanks, Bonnie. I hope things will be resolved soon and I can blog about them a bit. In the meantime, positive thoughts from others do help!

We're writing up wills this year, and including advanced directives, which I find comforting. Especially since the last time I wrote one was while I was awaiting gall bladder surgery last year and was comfortably vague on painkillers and barely remember what I signed. Right now I'm glad that my father has a directive and that my siblings and I don't have to worry about parsing the "what would Dad really want?," question.

And I'm envying you your Colorado autumn. It must be spectacular.

Caleb was the same way last year when he played soccer. All he really wanted to do was run around with the other kids. He wasn't interested in kicking the ball at all.
