    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

    more on decorating cakes

    posted Thursday, 28 June 2007
I’m so glad I took that cake decorating class. Roses and ruffles aren’t really my style, but being able to make them with frosting is a pretty cool thing. I’ll be taking the level 2 course in August and should learn how to make many different types of flowers and how to do the famous basketweave technique. I’ve also found a whole bunch of wonderful blogs all about baking cakes, decorating cakes, and appreciating desserts—so many, in fact, that I’ve added a “Food Blogs” category to my blogroll. There’s a huge cake-decorating-and-blogging-about-it subculture.

When I was a kid in the early ‘70s, my mom took the Wilton cake decorating series and I remember her bringing home the Wilton yearbook every year and asking me which cake I wanted her to make for my birthday. I don’t remember all the cakes she made for me, but I do remember a princess cake and a ladybug cake.

My mom died suddenly when I was 12. Taking the classes myself makes me feel more connected to my mom, and also makes me feel like I can create for Lily the same kinds of fabulously decorated cakes my mom made for me—making it a family tradition. Of course, I cringe at the thought of Lily requesting a princess cake and I’m not sure what I’ll do if/when she does.
