Arrived in San Francisco around lunch time for the Popular Culture Association/American Studies Association Joint Conference, which begins tomorrow. Travitt and Lily are with me, and Travitt and I are considering this trip sort of a 16th anniversary celebration trip (16 years married, 19 years together--hard to believe!).
Our hotel is practically next to the amazing Yerba Buena Gardens, so we ate lunch at a wood fired pizza place in the neighboring Metreon and then spent several hours at the gardens.
The garden’s Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial is incredibly moving. A 20 foot tall wall of water thunders down next to the King quote, “No, No, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.” The experience of hearing the water’s roar, feeling the light spray of the water, and reading those words together is surprisingly intense.
After contemplating at the memorial, we went over to the kids’ side of the park, which includes a huge sunken park covered in an amazingly resilient bouncy material. Lily played for an or so and managed to score a little boy’s email address.
