    A Community College Teaching Career

    posted Tuesday, 27 February 2007

If you are interested in teaching at a community college or merely morbidly curious about how faculty positions at a community college differ from those at four-year institutions, the MLA's Committee on Community Colleges' report, "A Community College Teaching Career," is a must read.

The information in the report on applying for and interviewing for positions at community colleges is very accurate, and the bulleted list of "distinct features" of community college faculty positions is both accurate and sobering.

There is a brief bit on adjunct positions at the end of the report, which is too bad. Since adjuncts make up the majority of many English departments at community colleges--including at Red Rocks--more space should have been devoted to adjunct positions. How ironic that, as usual, adjunct instructors are ignored in this report.

i used to be _very_ interested in teaching at a cc. in fact, that's what i wanted to do once i got my ph.d. now, though, that's changed. maybe, in part, b/c of the experience below, or maybe b/c i've realized how much i love the research aspect of what i do.

a lil anecdote: last year when i started applying for full-time positions i focused the overwhelming majority of my application energies on community college jobs thinking that since i hadn't completed my ph.d. that four-year institutions wouldn't be interested in me. though i wasn't even starting on my diss, yet, i wanted (needed!) to be back in the composition classroom. the cc applicant pool is - or must have been in my case - much more competitive. though i sent out applications to nearly 40 cc's, i only got one campus interview and 3 phone interviews. i sent out applications to maybe 5 four-year institutions and got one intereview and two phone interviews. this was an absolutely befuddling experience. i felt that my CV would be much more appealing to a cc, yet i got so little love.

i currently teach at a four year university.
