    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

what I got done this weekend

    posted Sunday, 23 September 2007
Once classes start, I seem to get personal things done only on weekends. There are a few exceptions, but mostly I work, work, work Monday through Friday and then cram all my personal projects and socializing into the weekends. Whatever doesn’t get done over the weekend has to wait until the next weekend.

What I got done this weekend:

    • Went to Lily’s soccer game (watching two teams of 5-year old girls play against each other is pretty hilarious—kids fall down randomly, one kid may be staring off into space as the rest of her team runs past her to go after the ball, kids wander on and off the field spontaneously)
    • Played two games of soccer with Lily, T, my sister, her husband, and my dad. Game #1: Girls against boys (girls won). Game #2: Girls against brother-in-law only (T and my dad wondered off; brother-in-law creamed us).
    • Weeded front yard. I hate these things. Little tiny ones (under 6") are everywhere in our yard and if I don't pull them up when they are tiny, they quickly become impossible to kill and they are totally invasive. Also this awful viney thing is tangled around everything. I am ready to be done gardening for a few months, although I still need to plant bulbs.
    • Put together a donation for Salvation Army, which I’ve been meaning to do for weeks. Lily saw me putting one of her baby blankets into the donation box and threw a fit and I ended up giving it back to her. Sigh.
    • Emailed comments to students on one batch of papers that were turned in last week.
    • Made a double batch of vanilla barley pudding with tea-poached peaches to eat for breakfast during the week.
    • Bought groceries for the week.

What I didn’t get done this weekend:

    • Finish painting the doors in Lily’s room. The two doors and one small part of window trim are all that I need to finish to be completely done with Lily’s room.
    • Reading the first half of Isabel Allende’s The House of the Spirits. Bad news: I apparently loaned out my copy and now need to acquire another copy pronto so I can read it and be ready to teach it on Tuesday. Poor planning on my part.
