    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

    audio essay redux

    posted Wednesday, 7 November 2007
For the last couple of years, I’ve had my comp 1 students compose and record audio essays based on the “This I Believe” audio essay series. I’ve been thrilled with the results and haven’t changed the assignment much since I started giving it, which is unusual for me—I usually tinker with assignments every semester, mostly out of a spirit of experimentation. But I haven’t tinkered with the audio essay assignment except to play with when in the semester I assign it. (I assigned it during weeks 12 and 13 the first time and then closer to midterm since then.)

When a Deaf student enrolled in my comp 1 class this semester, I knew I’d have to modify the assignment for her. I’m very happy with what I ended up doing. I took the audio essay assignment and wrote a “caption essay” assignment that asks the student to do all the same things her classmates were asked to do, but instead of dealing with aural aspects of the essay, she dealt with visual aspects. After writing her essay, she had to find or create a visual element that would do essentially what the voice recordings do for the audio essays—create intimacy with the reader/listener, emphasize and deemphasize particular aspects of the essays, and control pacing. Here is the caption essay assignment.

Here are the audio essays that have been recorded so far. I’m going to ask the student who did the caption essay for permission to post her essay, too.

This is flat-out excellent, Liz. Would you be willing to share your lesson plan?

    Hey Liz,

Have you heard of Storycorp. It's a nonprofit that sets up recording booths in which people can record interviews (for example with a friend or parent). They get to keep one copy and the other goes to the National Archives. They are also played on NPR.

They are often very moving. I can't tell you how many have brought me to tears.

    Here's the URl: http://www.storycorps.net/

You can also subscribe to the Podcast of excerpts on Itunes.

Wade, I haven't heard of Storycorp, but I will check it out.

Joanna, I'm happy to share my materials. You can find some of them here on the blog - go to http://revisionspiral.blog-city.com/this_i_believe_audio_e ssay_assignment.htm. I can email you the actual assignment I give and the supporting materials.
