    Surviving Work

(rules as they come to me)

    1. If a meeting has a specified end time, leave at that time, even if the meeting isn't over.
    2. If a meeting does not have a specified end time, call the meeting convener and ask when the meeting will end. Leave at the specified end time.
    3. Bring something to work on in case the meeting starts late.

Wal-mart: Evil Genius or Gentle Giant?

    posted Monday, 31 October 2005

In preparation for tomorrow's Common Ground session on Wal-mart, here are some interesting Websites I've found:

    • Factchecker--compares Wal-mart's claims about itself to facts
    • WakeUpWalmart Blog--tracks Wal-mart's doings in a blog format
    • The Truth About Wal-mart--lots of information on Wal-mart's union-busting, low wage-paying, sex-discriminating ways
    • Always Low Prices--another blog style Website, which makes the interesting observation that to cut health insurance costs, Wal-mart execs put out a memo encouraging the company to "attract a healthier workforce"
    • Pinko Feminist Helllcat--first, I must say I LOVE the name of this blog--debunks some of Wal-mart's claims about how well it treats its workforce
    • this site on the Wal-mart movie has an interesting comparison of Wal-mart's CEO's salary to Costco's CEO's salary
    • Wal-mart's own "fact" site--amusing for its extremely careful wording, such as claiming that because of its sales taxes, Wal-mart can be considered a boon to small communities
    • Wal-mart facts and links--includes statistics about how many small businesses closed in Iowa after Wal-mart arrived (and it ain't pretty)

People point to Walmart and cry "anti-union". Unions enable disfavored people to live satisfactorly without addressing their disfavor. This way their family's problems are never resolved. Without the union they would have to accept the heirarchy, their own inferiority. Unions serve to empower. Walmart is anti-union because they are good. They try to help people address and resolve their problems by creating an enviornment where there are fewer hurdles.

Media ridicule and lawsuits are creations to reinforce people's belief that Walmart is evil in a subsegment of the industry dominated by the middle and lower classes. Low-cost disfavored Chinese labor is utilized by corporate america to maximize margins. They all do it. Only WalMart gets fingered because they are the ones who help, and those who seek to create confusion in the marketplace want to eliminate the vast middle class who have a real chance and instead stick with lower classes who may not work otherwise. So they dirty him up while allowing the others to appear clean.

The coining of the term "Uncle Sam" was a clue alluding to this::Sam Walton's WalMart is one of few saviors of the peasant class.
