Seen at Joanna’s. (I took out "every day"--I don't think I do five things every single day to contribute to my success.)
1. Stay very, very organized. I love the Getting Things Done system, and I don’t think I could have possibly finished my Ph.D. while teaching full-time and being a reasonably good mother and wife without it.
2. Work out as often as I can, which is usually 3-4 times a week during fall and spring semesters and 5-6 times a week in the summer. I do yoga and pilates, lift weights, walk, and use a NordikTrak.
3. Spend quality time with my loved ones who live nearby (Lily, T, my dad, my sister, and some excellent good friends) and keep in touch by email/text message/phone with loved ones who live faraway (in-laws, godmother, more excellent good friends).
4. Schedule time each week to work on my own professional development, reading journal articles and books about composition, reading blogs of other academics, drafting (OK, so far it’s been only thinking about) articles to submit to journals, sketching out a plan for turning part of my dissertation into a book, etc.
5. Get some P-time. P-time is a code word at my house for “time alone doing my own thing.” The P stands for Paul, who is a friend of ours who needs more alone time than anyone else I’ve ever met.
You are my new idol. My abortive efforts at GTD were good...while they
lasted. I have no spouse or children. I had a TAship this year, not a
full-time job. I have a supportive committee and a therapist and even used
a dissertation coach for a while last year. And I'm scattered and
frustrated and overwhelmed. Yeesh.
